Rider Comments:

  • "Just took this road in an RV on Easter Sunday morning ['only' a 20 footer--wouldn't recommend it for a larger vehicle]. Very little traffic, thankfully, as there are sharp turns, steep grades, and one lane areas [for example a tiny bridge at the bottom of a hill, with a sharp right turn onto it.] I wanted to stop all the time for photos and to soak in the beauty of the area, but there are few places to safely stop for an RV. Saw dozens of quail in the road, and a huge turkey! Farm and ranchland, cattle and horses, mountaintop vistas, rolling pastured hills, a stream [river?] along the road in places--so beautiful! One of my favorite country roads EVER, and I grew up in Maine, surrounded by some of the country's most scenic roads. Hope to go there again soon, in a car, when not in a rush, and with a picnic basket and a video camera. Don't miss it, it'll refresh your spirit!" - Anonymous (4/28/11)
  • "Two lane mountain crossing the coastal range behind Big Sur. About 1200 feet of climb to crest midway. Trout stream next to road each way from crest. Several sections of one lane roadway posted 10 mph limit. Very little traffic." - Dennis DeWitt (3/21/11)
  • "The 1st, less twisty, half of this road is in good condition and has divided lanes. The 2nd, more twisty, half on the Greenfield side of this road is very bumpy and has no lane division. It wasn't as enjoyable to ride due to always thinking about a car hogging the road coming around one of the corners and plowing right into you. The bicycles hog the whole lane as well by not staying close to the right side, so watch out for them too." - Rider from Monterey, CA (7/14/10)
  • "Remote backcountry road connecting Carmel on the coast to US101 inland. No stops or cross traffic, little traffic of any kind. Crosses many minor passes, hugs hillsides, lots of ranch country." - Rider from Sunnyvale, CA (6/8/08)
