Rider Comments:

  • "I live here and this little-known stretch is an undiscovered gem. This is the road that was written about in the Commander Cody song "Hot Rod Lincoln". They changed the name to Grapevine Hill in the song, but it was an actual race up this very hill that the song-writer was telling about. And it hasn't had a name-change. It's still Spiral Highway. That's what the road sign says. The pavement is in great condition. You can go to a scenic viewpoint when you get to the top. Go back down, and do it again! It's eight miles, with several straight stretches that will allow you to pick up some speed. Beware, though, the speed limit is 35." - Anonymous (6/17/08)
  • "I rode the Spiral Highway at the end of June, 07. This 10 mile stretch of road was the highlight of a 1,000 mile roadtrip through eastern Washington and northern Idaho. The only bad thing I have to say about this road, is that going up, you dont really have time to check out the spectacular views, just when you snatch a quick glance you enter a hairpin turn. If its not a hairpin, its a tight chicane, or "S" curve. Wonderful road, this year I am going DOWN the Spiral Highway. I want to check out the views." - Brian Lange (2/26/08)
  • "I just went for a ride to this spot in June 2007, they recently changed it from Spiral Highway to Frontage Road." - Rider from Spokane, Washington (7/6/07)
  • "This used to be part of US 95, the main North/South route through Idaho. It was replaced in the late 70's by a much straighter highway (which you can see to the right on the map). They have kept the highway well paved, and it gets little use. This highway has is all: Spectacular views, very good pavement, sweepers, hairpins, and lots in between. Great for a slow, scenic gander, or an aggressive challenge. If you've never ridden it before, you should consider riding once just to look at the view, or at least stop at the top and get it out of your system. Otherwise it can be pretty distracting when you should be watching the road, especially if you want to take all that this excellent highway can give you. The only downside is that (like any good motorcycle road) it's only about eight miles long. As a kid, it seemed to take forever to go get through this stretch. Now, it goes by in a flash, and I want to ride it again and again. To sum up: Twisties, sweepers, scenery, very good pavement, little traffic. Doesn't get much better." Goffe Torgerson, Technostolic, (3/6/07)
  • "Right off Highway 95, it decends 2000ft down into the valley. 10 miles of back-to-back 180 degree-plus switchbacks and chicans, most of which are slightly banked. One of the greatest roads in all of Idaho or Washington." - Rider from Idaho (5/13/06)
