Rider Comments:
- "I just rode MD-51 today (14 June, 2011) from the Paw Paw area to Cumberland. I enjoyed the scenery, and being away from traffic, and the gentle curves, and in theory, it is a nice ride. What I really did not enjoy is the poor condition of the road. (Uncomfortable ride, to say the least) West Virginia roads, in general, are some of the best I have ridden. WV seems to spend more money on infrastructure than most states I have visited. I mention this because, as soon as you see the 'Welcome to Maryland' sign, the road surface deteriorates measurably. MD 51 has uneven expansion joints, holes, creases in the pavement, loose gravel, etc. I felt like I spent most of my time trying to avoid the bumps, rather than enjoying the ride. On my return trip from Cumberland, MD to Winchester, Virginia, I chose route 28 South, to join route 50 East, and the road surfaces were significantly better. There were plenty of enjoyable curves and elevation changes, and the scenery is similar, if not better, than MD route 51." - Walter (6/14/11)
- "Beginning in Cumberland, SR 51 starts out as a 4-lane road and travels along an active railroad yard. But once you leave the area and 51 becomes 2-lane, things get much better. Nice road, some elevation changes, and occasional views of the Potomac River. 51 crosses the Potomac at Paw Paw, WV where you can continue your ride on WV 9, another great motorcycle road." - Webmaster, MotorcycleRoads.US (7/7/09)
