Ride along Lake Michigan and through the Sleeping Bear Dunes.
- Michael Watters (1/3/13)
This is a must ride - one of the best in Michigan.
Going from south to north is more fun.
Once entering the Sleeping Bear N.P., keep an eye open for M109.
That will take you to the Pierre Stocking Dr which is an amazing park - serious photo ops and if you wish a climb down AND UP a 450' sand dune to Lake Michigan.
When leaving the park, stay north on M109 and plan a lunch stop in Glen Arbor, a really nice, quaint little summer town.
SBNP is full of hills, rolling curves and beautiful countryside.
If you want to cut some time off the trip, cut across M22 to the Grand Traverse Bay and into Traverse City.
We did the whole around the lake trip a couple of years ago and this was our favorite - even over Highway 2 along Lake Superior.

The road follows the Lake Michigan shoreline, rising and falling across the glacial moraines and offering beautiful views, scenic areas, and quaint towns full of art, clothes, good food, and ice cream.

Nice ride with some sweepers, many scenic viewpoints along the way.

This is an awesome ride, but be vigilant in watching for deer.
Riding before noon last week, I saw several cross ahead of me.

I live 2 miles from this route and ride it often.
This is easily one of the best rides in the state.
The only thing to add is to mention that the short trip up Pierce Stocking Drive is not to be missed.
This is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
This winding road takes you up, up, up to a phenomenal overlook of Lake Michigan, where you see both North and South Manitou Islands.
It is only about 10 miles or so, then back down to 22.

M22 is awesome.
It continues south from Northport to Traverse City.
There are great views of the bays, but traffic in the summer can be busy.
'The Happy Hour' just SW of Northport has great chow and 'Boone's' in Suttons Bay has good food and drink as well.

SR-22 is perhaps Michigan's best motorcycle road.
It takes you through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, wonderful towns like Leland (stop in Leland's 'fishtown' for lunch), and great twisties and lake vistas.
I cannot believe that it was not posted here earlier.
Can't beat it!
