Rider Comments:

  • "This is an excellent ride to take if you're heading north through western Nebraska. I found out about it by visiting this website, and I'm glad I did. It's a Nebraska Scenic Byway and for good reason. It runs through the Sand Hills and the scenery is absolutely fantastic. Not hardly any traffic and not too many farms or ranches along the way either. The southern half of this route near Ellsworth is more hilly and you'll love how this road winds up and down and around these hills. There are small lakes along the way and a person could really get used to how beautiful it is out there. The northern part tends to straighten out a bit and stay on top of the hills, but it's just as sweet. Not too many trees along the way, but you don't need them. You won't want to stop for shade too much once you start out on this road.
When I rode it in August, 2010 there were stretches of lateral cracking in the pavement that were overly crack-sealed and made for a bumpy ride. But they're not very long. There was also about a 7 mile patch job that was not very good and forced you to dial back the speed a bit on that stretch. But the views more than make up for it. Hopefully Nebraska DOT has a rehab scheduled for this road in the near future. It would be a shame to let it deteriorate any further.
Ellsworth is rather light on services, so err on the side of caution and be gassed up before you get there. You might get stuck there waiting for a coal train to pass on the busy Burlington Northern tracks. Gordon is a bigger town and you can get what you need there.
Even though it's a little rough in a few places, this road is way worth the ride. Recommend taking it if you're headed for Sturgis." - Rider from Cheyenne, Wyoming (9/23/10)
