We rode this road in one day.
Ended up staying in Alpine, AZ.
Great road, long straights, easy riding.
Did not have any trouble with fuel.
Lot of small towns, watch for local law and do the speed limit.
The Pie-O-Neer restaurant ONLY serves pies now.
Still be sure and stop, great pies, friendly management.
- Jeff Ferguson, Nashville, TN (12/6/10)
Excellent 2 lane paved highway through some very lonely country.
Fill up in Fort Sumner "Grave of Billy the Kid", head over the Pecos River and one of the loneliest rides ever.
Between Fort Sumner and Vaughan, I saw absolutely no other traffic for 56 miles, except for two freight trains which blew their horns when I waved at them.
Flat plateau cattle country changing to high mountain desert country around Mountainair and the spectacular Manzano Mountains.
Sharp curves, long sweepers through the mountains, otherwise fairly straight.
Elevation changes to over 6000 feet elevation.
Amenities in Fort Sumner, Vaughan, Willard, and Mountainair.
- Dick Yates (1/8/09)
This road is a nice ride with long straights and easy sweeping curves, good road surface, plenty of shoulder and scenic views.
There isn't much except scenery along it, but there are restaurants, cafes and motels in both Soccorro and Magdalena.
The Western Motel in Magdalena is small, quiet and quaint, and the restaurant across the street serves passable New Mexican fare.
- Rider from Albuquerque, NM (2/18/08)
A fine ride through high desert forest going through a valley filled with gaint radio telescopes (V.L.A.).
Gas up in Socorro.
The next place is the town of Datil, about half way (daytime only).
- Rider from Clovis, New Mexico (9/9/07)
Scenic views. Nice highway.
Stop in Pie Town and have breakfast, cheeseburger, or PIE at the Pie-O-Neer Restaurant.
Check your gas, as gas is available in Magdalena and Quemado only on Sunday.
- Rider from Albuquerque, New Mexico (10/29/06)
Travel from Springerville to Socorro.
Stop and have a slice of pie in Pie Town, cross the Continental Divide, see the Very Large Array and then end up in Socorro.
- Rider from Henderson, Nevada (10/9/06)
