  • Rode this stretch of road in May of 2011 so it wasn’t insanely hot yet, but a very comfortable mid-80s. more...
The road itself is in great shape – not a single pothole or crack; you can tell that it’s been repaved recently.
For someone who has only ever ridden in the NE USA, this was a definite treat. Vistas that spanned for many miles, distant mountains, and an occasional peek ahead at the many twists and bends of the road ahead (very enjoyable twists and bends I might add). I should mention I was riding this on a BMW 1200GS – my first time on the bike (rental) and I had no problem running between 60 and 80 mph (and maybe a little more on the rare straightaway). A word of caution though – there are some very hefty bugs in the desert and they make quite an impact at 80 so keep that eye protection on!
The Valley of Fire State Park is a must-visit. Pay the entrance fee at the oft-unmanned entrance area – you’ll enjoy good Karma for the rest of the day (but make sure to take a water-break and watch the tourists that pass through trying to decide the “right” course of action...it’s pretty funny. Unless you packed for the desert you might want to shoot past the park up to Overton to get some water, gas, etc. and then head back and take your time among the red rocks. Like an earlier contributor mentioned, 166 and 167 are essentially the same road though the park and Overton are on 167.
It was getting late by the time I got through Valley of Fire so I headed back to Vegas by way of 15. If you have time, backtrack through 167 – the road past the park to 15 is ugly and boring in comparison to all that came before – but it is a heck of a lot faster. There’s a big gas station/market at the interection at 15 so you can refuel before heading to other points. I can’t compare this to other roads in Nevada, but this one sure spoiled me for NE riding...until the Fall that is! - Jason (5/25/11)

Spend a day with an exquisite example of Desert SW desert motorcycling by treating both 166 and 167 as the same tour. The perfect tour of this road would be:
Take in the new loop created by the construction of the new Hoover Dam bypass bridge. You can park at one end and walk a pedestrian path all the way across the bridge with expansive views of the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and the Colorado River over 800 feet below you. Circle back to ride over Hoover Dam; the turn-around is about 3 miles into Arizona on 93.
Enter Lake Mead National Recreation Area off Highway 93 at Lake Shore Road/166 visitors station just as you break out of the dam area at Lake Shore road and 93. Entrance fee is $5.
Just before the Lake Mead Parkway entrance station, turn right as to stay on the park roads. Head NE towards Overton on North Shore road/167. You will move away from the lake but head into the mountains you see in the distance. There are many turnouts for photo ops. There are two bathrooms along the way. Both are pit toilets but well kept. They are at about the 20 and 28 mile marker at North Shore Summit and Red Stone parking area. There are several pleasant side trips to Marinas along the way where food, gas, refreshments and bathrooms are available.
Head towards Overton. Eat at Sugars in Overton. Very biker friendly and great food. Most services are available in Overton.
Before or after Overton, make sure to take in Valley of Fire. Valley of Fire is a State Park and does not honor your National Park pass. Entrance fee is $10.
The route from this point you can turn around to head north on 93 to cross Hoover Dam or the bypass bridge; taking in Valley of Fire and ending at Sugars in Overton is 95 miles and can easily take 3 to 5 leisurely hours with stops. Bring water as services are few and far in-between. Ignore any comments about construction. The construction is complete and roads are in excellent condition for the duration. - Anonymous (2/18/11)

From valley of fire entrance to ?? there were flaggers set up and waited for what seemed to be 15 mins to go through. I am a local resident and used to ride through often, but since construction have avoided it altogether for now. - Anonymous (5/23/10)
  • Great way to journey up to the Valley of Fire; plenty of sweeping curves with some twisties, but great scenery all along the way. more...
About 3/4's of the way up, stop at Rogers Springs and admire the warm water lagoon & oasis in the middle of nowhere, but don't drink the water! It is full of Naegleria Fowleri, otherwise known as the 'brain-eating amoeba'. Early morning light is best way to appreciate this beautiful ride. - 'Redline' (11/20/09)
  • Several sections of this road are currently under construction and are gravel for several miles. more...

New blacktop 2007. This has to be some of the best riding in the US. - Rider from St. Paul, MN (1/13/07)
