- Fast sweepers but the road can be rough in some spots. more...- Colin Williams (7/18/11)
- The north end of this road is situated right in the dead center of NOWHERE! more...Absolutely beautiful and peaceful and all to ourselves. Long way between services but well worth the adventure, great views in stone arabia, a sure top ten in NY state. - 'Butch, Menace and Adirondack' (6/20/11)
- Start At TA's diner in Walton NY. more...Across the street is Klingers Power Sports, cleanest restrooms in NY state, biker friendly. Continue North on SR 10, a two lane state road along the West Branch of the Delaware River. A scenic river valley, Bald Eagles, fairly level and straight. In Stamford is Mt. Utsayantha, highest point in Delaware County with views of the Catskills, Susquehanna River Valley and Adirondacks. For those with bikes capable of dirt roads and steep inclines you can visit, free, the restored fire tower on top of Mt. Utsayantha. Then continue North on SR 10 up over Mt. Jefferson and drop down into the Susquehanna River valley. On Mt. Jefferson are spectacular views of the Catskills.
Continue North on SR 10 through the Susquehanna Valley. Cross the Erie Canal and when you pass Canajoharie, start looking for and looking out for the Amish horse and wagon riders. As quiet as my Goldwing is it has spooked more then one horse causing the horse to bolt onto SR 10!
As you continue North on SR 10, leaving the Susquehanna Valley you will start to pick up elevation as you approach the foothills of the Adirondacks. The road will start to get a little twisty here with views of the Adirondacks, Caroga Lake, Canada Lake, Stones Lake, and West Branch River. You are now in the Adirondacks. There are places to eat and little traffic. Gas stations are far apart and off season might be closed. You will also meet bikers coming down from Canada here. Watch for deer, bear, and moose. I have not seen any moose myself but have seen DOT warning signs. This is one of my favorite roads and have taken friends from NYC on tours through the area and most actually slow down to take in the sights. Speed limits are 55 mph out of town and most villages are 30 to 40 mph. The road surface is black top and is in good condition with many being rebuilt after the flood of 2006. Some of the cross roads are paved with oil and stone and you can expect some loose stones scattered at these intersections during summer paving season.!
I have left on rides on summer mornings with temps in the upper 40's, rising to the 80's, then back down to the 40's when the sun starts to drop behind the mountains. I also have encountered snow showers, spring and fall, in the mountains and temps in the 60's during later in the afternoon. - Rider from Walton, NY (8/7/10) - A lot of twisties, especially just north of Sharon Springs. more...- Rider from Scotia, NY (5/26/10)
- For Sportbikes, the best section is between Pine Lake and Higgins Bay; sports car enthusiasts come here, too...so watch for people crossing into your lane. more...South of Pine lake is more sweepers and cruising; lot of small towns. The restaurant at the intersection of 10 and 29a is a small "grill" ... but has excellent food (prime rib, etc). I was really surprised to get food like that from such a small place hidden in the mountains. I don't know the name of it, but you can't miss it. - 'Magic Rat' (11/23/06)
- Wide road, sweeping turns, and nice scenery. more...- Jon Smith
