Rider Comments:
- "This is one of my favorite roads in the area.
Be fully aware that road conditions can be poor if the previous winter has been especially bad or if maintenance has not been done in recent years.
The shoulders can be soft and limited in area.
Twists, turns, and elevation gains or losses (depending on the direction of travel). The road was huge fun when the speed limit was unposted (and therefore 55mph by default) but still a lot of fun at the now posted (in spots) 40mph. Be careful near Frost Valley in the summer as the campers frequently cross the road to access facilities. The hairpin turn at the lower base of the grade (about halfway) is quite tight and posted at 15mph.
The East Branch of the Neversink River parallels the road for a piece. The trailhead for the highest mountain in the Catskills (Slide Mountain) is located along this road. The trailhead for Giant Ledge is at the hairpin turn and leads to one of the best views (40-50 miles on a clear day) after a hike of 2miles.
On the Claryville end of the road, good food can be had at the Claryville Country Store (a.k.a. the Blue Hill Lodge). At the Big Indian side, Morra Market is good for basic supplies and food. Once on the road itself, amenities are very limited.
Simply put, a great driving or riding road." - Mark (5/31/10) - "What a great road! The ride is 20 miles of great twists with wonderful elevation changes and awesome scenery. The road is best ridden from south to north with the river on your right. Few driveways or cross streets. Unbelievable during foliage season." - Ed Conde (10/15/07)
- "This is a beautiful twisty road with lots of sharp turns and steep inclines. The scenery is awesome as well, especially in the fall and early winter when you can see deep into the woods. Just be careful as there are bears and other wildlife in the area and they often cross the road. Other road conditions to watch out for are; a sudden, short sharp turn on to a bridge just as you leave the Village of Claryville, and the 15MPH left turn as you proceed down the mountain around 5 miles after Frost Valley YMCA Resort. Enjoy and have a safe ride." - Ben Otunu (1/23/06)
