  • This is a video I took of one section of 164. more...
It is a pretty cool road. If ridden in the spring or fall be aware of farm equipment that may be on the road. The video does not show the severity of some of those hills. Look at some of the driveways--tractor trailer rigs backed in. When you crest a hill be ready for anything. Also when entering the small towns along the way--honor thy speed limit. The local LEO's do use radar. Ride it-it won't disappoint. YouTube video - 'Hawknut' (9/26/10)
  • I hope you all don't object to comments from a 'cage' driver. more...
Although in my defense let me state that I have well over 50,000 miles on motorcycles, and am only kept off them by a bad back. And the 'cage' is a peppy Cobalt shod with high-performance tires.
Drove SR164 yesterday for the second time. This time in reverse, from Lisbon to Leesville. What an incredible road! I have driven the 'Tail of the Dragon' in Tennessee several times, and although SR164 is not the Dragon, it is one heck of a stretch of pavement. I would go so far as to say that SR164 can be more 'surprising' than the Dragon, due primarily to the blind crests. I also like the fact that at many places on SR164 (similar to several places on the Dragon), you can see sequences of several turns, which aids the safety aspect if you're driving in a 'spirited' manner. The road itself was in great shape; the pavement was pretty smooth, with the only exception being an occasional inside shoulder that wasn't in the best of shape. But 'between the lines' it was just fine. No gravel, and no nasty patches to hit. The opportunities for fun on this road are endless. Reading a review by an anonymous poster below, I noticed the comment that it had a section that the reviewer wanted to call 'Ohio's Corkscrew' (of course referring to the famous turn at Laguna Seca), and I know the exact spot he's referring to; it had the wife frantically grasping to hold onto something, and also a suggestion that I should 'take it a bit easier', lol. One warning though; in Bergholz, local LEO's like to park in a business on the south end of town, over a hill and past a blind turn. It's one of those cases where the city limits extend a good deal further than what you would consider the 'town proper', and at that point you feel like the speed limit should be back to normal, but it's not. Also, be aware that you will see roadsigns alerting you to the presence of Amish buggies, but as long as you're being careful on Saturday (when most of the Amish do their 'town' business), you should be fine. Just be careful over those blind crests.
A 'loop' suggestion; as I live in the Akron-Canton area, try taking SR172E from the Paris area to Lisbon (there will be a very short stretch of US 30), then SR164S out of Lisbon to its terminus at SR212 in Leesville. Then take SR212W, which is another very nice stretch of road. Then in Beach City, catch SR93N, and take it back to the Akron-Canton area. Makes for a very nice afternoon. - 'Fletch' (8/30/10)
  • I rode this road for the first time today. more...
The fun stuff is mostly south of Salineville, though the northern portion will still keep the average rider entertained. There's some nice fresh pavement around Amsterdam with paved shoulders! As a previous commenter mentioned, towards the southern end there are some dangerous elevation changes, sometimes right before or coming into a turn, be careful not to launch yourself off the road, it's easier than you might think. Going around noon on a friday, there was some traffic but thankfully there are stretches that allow you to overtake. Overall I'd say if you live in northern Ohio, this is a road worth checking out. - Anonymous (8/21/10)
  • I just moved to Cleveland and, based on the comments on this page, I rode this road for the first time yesterday. more...
Echoing a previous comment, it will NOT be the last time I ride this road. It was the most fun I've had on my bike in a long time. There are plenty of corners to keep you busy, and a great variety of them too. Some of the corners are pretty sharp, but are signed appropriately. Just watch coming over hills, as a couple of them feature drastic changes in elevation, including one I am ready to call the Ohio Corkscrew. The road is very lightly traveled, and I did not encounter a single car the entire distance. The scenery along the route is also outstanding, with a canopy of trees covering the roadway in several sections. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. This should be a 'motorcycle-only road' for sure. - Anonymous (8/11/10)
  • MotorcycleRoads.US has the beginning of this ride out of Lisbon yet the remaining portion of the ride is just as good. more...
I would call this ride a close second to SR 555 in Southern Ohio. I ride this at least once a year if not twice. Combine with SR 170 and it makes for a great day of riding. Especially in the fall. - Anonymous (7/31/10)
  • Route 164 is especially good between the towns of Salineville and Bergholz. more...
Riding south out of Salineville you will encounter some of the best pavement in Ohio. Its mostly farmland, but there are lots of ups and downs with many sharp turns and fast sweepers. I'd say that section is definitely for the more advanced riders...cruisers will have to take some of the sharp turns very carefully. There is very little traffic on this road as well, which is always nice. - BAS, Akron, OH (3/17/09)
  • Just rode 164 for the first time. more...
It won't be my last. I only have 3000 miles under my belt, but this has been my favorite ride so far. I enjoyed the turns and riding 'under the trees'. You have to keep your head up at all times and be prepared to shift more than usual. It was a very exciting ride for me. The road was in very good shape today. Safe enough for new riders like me, but I think it would give seasoned riders a thrill. - LBS, Massillon, OH (8/16/08)
  • This is one of those roads that should be 'motorcycles only'. more...
I've ridden it dozens of times going to teach and home from New Philadelphia to Wellsville, as well as just on a fun run. Stop at the little diner in Amsterdam for lunch - reasonable prices and decent food. - Stuck in the flatlands of Columbus (8/13/08)
