Rider Comments:

  • "I often take this ride in the summer. Starting on Route 522 going south and turn left at Burnt Cabins. The section through Cowans Gap State Park is worth the effort to get there. The blacktop is smooth, nice sweeping turns and the trees keep the temperatures cool here. When you get to Route 30, turn right. At the top of the mountain there is a bar on the left. The Mountain House has good food and a large deck on the side that seems to always have a good crowd during the riding season. After filling up your belly and taking some pictures of the valley, continue west on Route 30. At the bottom of the mountain you can catch Route 522 and follow it back to the north." - Anonymous (2/20/08)
  • "Turn off Rt 30 onto rt 75 in Ft Loudon. Stop and eat at the Milky Way Restaurant. They have great ice cream there. About 4 to 6 miles outside of Ft Loudon turn left on Cowans Gap State Park Road. This section for the next 5 miles is the twistiest. At the end of the road is the Cowans Gap State Park with a small lake and camping area. To walk around the lake is 3 miles. There are many hiking trails here. Back onto the road heading towards Burnt Cabins is another 6 miles of twisty roads. This section is a faster section and you can open up your throttle more. Motorcyclist for decades have been coming here. In the small town of Burnt Cabins is a Grist Mill and another camp ground. The Grist Mill has some great Buck Wheat pancake mix. Worth your while to get some! A mile down the road is the Burnt Cabins Hotel. This a bar and grill. Decades past it had some hotel rooms. Tell Star-Ann Joe Meece says hello. You can ride Rt 522 towards Shade Gap, Orbisonia/Rock Hill, and Mt Union. In Orbisonia/Rock Hill is the East Broad Top Railroad. This is a narrow guage R/R from the late 1800's and they do offer rides on the weekends. The Pizza Star Restaurant is a very good place to have a bite to eat also." - Joseph Meece (10/6/06)
