  • "Unfortunately when I was on this road I was trying to out run a thunderstorm building to the west. I could see the northern edge of the storm so I punched it to avoid getting wet. What's nice about this road is that you can do just that. Being on the US System it's wider than most state routes and is fairly well maintained. It has four foot shoulders along most of it, they drop down to 2 foot in some places, and goes through some beautiful hills and rangeland. Heading north from Mission, SD you instantly start getting into the hills and curve your way around them. After about 15 miles or so you drop down into the Little White River drainage and follow the river to the town of White River, SD. Gotta slow down to get through town, but on the other side you can twist up again and get back to business. You cross the Little White River north of town. Be mindful going up the north side, however. When I went through in August, 2010 there was a deceptive depression in the north bound lane climbing up the hill that I hit at 65 mph and bottomed out my Road King. It kinda knocked me for a loop but didn't wreck me, only made me mad that it wasn't marked. I didn't stop to check for damage because the bike was running fine (hats off to Harley for building such tough and dependable bikes) and I had winds from a big thunderstorm starting to blow in from the west. So watch for that. Otherwise the rest of the road was fine. Further north you're still in hilly country when you drop down into a big valley to cross the actual White River. This is a beautiful river valley and crossing that you should really enjoy. Like most of South Dakota, this road doesn't have very much traffic so you can really run.
As you get closer to Murdo the rangeland and hills give way to flatter farm land. I had beat the storm to Murdo, but it was still coming, so I turned east on I-90 and punched it for Vivian, SD. Other than the slight road damage I encountered north of White River, this road is in great shape and a really fun ride. Next time I ride it, I hope the weather is better so I can take my time to really take in the beautiful countryside along the way." - Rider from Cheyenne, WY (8/20/10)
