- This road is one of the best secrets in Texas and the US. more...The scenery is magnificent and there are no big trees to block the view. About 80 miles riding along the beautiful Rio Grande and I only passed three vehicles from the other direction. One motorcycle and two trucks. Great ride. - Jerry from Montgomery, TX (8/6/11)
- I agree. This is one of the best roads in Texas to ride. Heck Far! more...It is one of the best roads to explore on a motorcycle in this country. The first time I experienced it was at night. We got to Terlingua way too late and decided to travel on to Presidio. I must admit...it was pretty scary to navigate this road in darkness.
I have made up for that first mistake though and have ridden it several times. There is too much to see and to try and describe it all is almost impossible. Make sure you stop and explore the 'movie set' which is located on the left a few miles after leaving Terlingua. "Deadman's Walk", "The Streets of Laredo" and other westerns have used this unique set along the banks of the Rio Grande River.
There is another location down the road a bit that has a pull off to the left. I can not remember the name for sure but I think it has been referred to as 'Big Hill'. Take the time and enjoy the view. This location has been used in various films as well. "Deadman's Walk" and one of the "Gunsmoke" movies are two that comes to mind. It is a beautiful view of the mountains and the Rio Grande River. Be careful when parking your bike. Make sure she is in gear as it is a pretty steep parking area.
Watch out for the critters. Seeing the wild burros are pretty neat but there are deer and javelinas to look out for as well.
I hate to repeat myself but it is a great road to ride and the guys I ride with will be visiting it again in April. Oh...if you ride into Presidio around lunch time make sure you check out the 'El Patio' restaurant. We never have had a bad meal there. - Frank S., Van Buren, AR (3/27/11) - 170 is a real Jewel!! more...The Presidio to Terlingua portion has a road construction detour that is 1.8 miles long due to flooding. Take the detour, it is rocky and hilly, but passable. I did it on my LT 1200. Easy does it as the road condition is not for fast company, but for enjoyment! And enjoy you shall be rewarded in spades! Make darn sure you have gas, as all these locations on the map do not have gas stations etc. You are about 75 miles from any gas, so ya can't say you weren't warned. In Terlingua, there is gas and eateries. Make sure you go into the Ghost town part... Deer and Javelinas are all over, so there is another hazard to be aware of. - Michael Haught (1/11/09)
- This is one very cool ride! more...One of the finest roads as far as scenic views, and putting riding skills to the test! Beware of bee hives right along side of the roads...I got stung 4 times! But still had a blast! Every rise I rode up over provided a vista view worthy of a photo! Too cool! - Rodney (1/6/08)
- One of the finest rides in Texas and getting there is half the fun. more...Lots of wildlife including wild donkeys and javalina. Night rides are not recommended. Speed Limits should be followed closely as this is not a road for racing. Be ready for rocks in the road half way thru the next blind curve. TxDOT does a great job but they can't be everywhere all the time. Stop at Contrabano, a made for movie village right on the river, great place for pictures. - Ron on the Rio Grande (9/18/07)
- Very twisty, lots of curves. more...One very steep grade and a small creek crossing it. Follows the Rio Grande river. Fun road. - Glenn Wilson (4/25/07)
- Prettiest road in Texas. more...Was so much fun I turned around and went back the same way. Hills, twisty, dry, hot to warm year around. NO GAS, take your time! - Rider from El Paso, Texas (12/5/06)
