• "From Tazewell, take Exit 3 on Highway 19/460 onto SR 61. Ride SR 61 east approximately 6 miles to (Secondary State Route) 623 - which is on your right. This is Burkes Garden Road. 623 is an exciting, tisty, curvy, well paved, and very lightly traveled road that takes you up the mountain and down into Burkes Garden Valley.
  Burkes Garden is a very quiet farming community, located in a beautiful pastoral valley. It is surrounded on all sides by a ring of mountain ridges. The road (623) is suitable for any type of road bike until you ride further south and start to climb out of the valley. Here 623 becomes a very exciting and challenging gravel road. It's very slow going and it is best suited for dual-sport or "GS" type bikes. On this portion of 623, you are isolated and surrounded by dense forest; which is loaded with beautiful Mountain Laurels. You will cross the 'Appalachian National Scenic Trail' at the top, and then descend down through an exciting series of multible tight switchbacks. 623 will then end at SR 42.
